Acupuncture for Hot Flashes
Hot Flashes are Caused by an Imbalance of Yin and Yang
In Chinese medicine there are two governing principles in the human body: yin (wet and cold) and yang (dry and hot). In other words, our system functions most optimally when we can maintain a balance between extremes of moisture and temperature. As we age, however, our yin becomes depleted and we dry out, resulting in symptoms like thirst, dry skin, dry hair, constipation, dry mucous membranes, and what is referred to as false heat. False heat is different from the type of heat that we experience at the height of summer because it is really due to a deficiency of cooling yin. In this kind of imbalance, even though yang is at a normal level, because the yin is relatively deficient, the yang seems to be excessive even when it really isn't. Examples of false heat include hot flashes, night sweats, and even certain types of fevers.
Acupuncture Can Build Yin and Clear Heat
As you know, hot flashes have a rising energy. In Chinese medicine this is understood as an inability of the deficient yin (cold) to balance and anchor the yang (heat), so it rises up. Acupuncture can build up the yin so it can anchor the yang, and clear the heat to reduce the intensity of the hot flashes. One of the points that is used for hot flashes is located at the top of the head and it can be needled in a downward direction, against the flow of the channel, to redirect the rising energy.
