In Chinese medicine pain is primarily caused by a blockage of chi and blood. Chi is an energy that circulates along pathways called channels and, like blood, it is supposed to flow smoothly and freely all over the body. Both chi and blood can become blocked due to things like injury, stress, or inactivity, resulting in pain, tension, and reduced range of motion. Because the main treatment principle of Chinese massage is to move chi and blood, it tends to be deeper and more technical than spa-type massages. Chinese massage and the associated traditional bodywork techniques listed below can effectively stop pain by releasing tension and constriction, breaking up scar tissue, warming and realigning muscle fibers, and opening the channels. If you are interested in trying Chinese massage for pain I incorporate it into my acupuncture sessions at no extra charge. You can also book a session for just Chinese massage for either 30 or 60 minutes and package discounts are available.
